The Pakistan cricket team has faced intense scrutiny following their premature exit from the T20 World Cup 2024. Losses to both the USA and India sealed their fate, leading to widespread criticism from fans and experts alike. Among the critics is former Pakistan wicket-keeper batter Atiq-uz-Zaman, who delivered a scathing critique of the team’s performance and conduct.

In a video circulating on social media, Atiq expressed his frustration, claiming that the players appeared more focused on enjoying their time in the USA than on their cricketing responsibilities. He highlighted that the team had booked an excessive number of rooms, suggesting a lack of seriousness in their approach to the tournament.

“You are creating such a drama. During our time, there used to be a coach and with him a manager — the team was run like that,” Atiq said. “Now, you have 17 officials and 17 players, and it’s being said you booked 60 rooms. That’s a joke! Have you gone there to play cricket or to holiday?”
Atiq’s criticism extended to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), questioning the policy of allowing families to accompany players during such significant events. He argued that this practice distracts players from their primary focus, which should be on the game.
“Why do you allow families in big events?… They go out in the evening and the focus shifts from cricket to family, kids, wife… They are eating at takeaway joints and are being captured on videos there,” he lamented. “Such a culture has been created in Pakistan cricket that nobody knows what is discipline… You have gone to play such a big event, where is your focus?… Can’t you leave everything else and focus on cricket alone for two weeks? You are being paid crores annually.”
Atiq’s harsh words reflect a broader disappointment among Pakistan cricket fans and former players, who expected a stronger showing from the national team at the T20 World Cup 2024. As the team heads back home, the PCB faces significant pressure to address these concerns and implement changes that could restore the team’s focus and discipline ahead of future competitions.
