Bollywood needs an overhaul and how! In 2019, Akshay Kumar starred in four consecutive successful films, Shahid Kapoor delivered the biggest hit of his career in the form of Kabir Singh and Ranveer Singh was flying with the success of Gully Boy. Three years, multiple Covid waves and South Indian blockbuster later – the tables surely seem to have turned. This year, Ranveer Singh delivered a disastrous Jayeshbhai Jordaar, Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey tanked, and how & Akshay Kumar delivered his third dud of the year with Raksha Bandhan after Bachchhan Pandey & Samrat Prithviraj. It’s been a particularly messy year at the box office with only a handful of hits including Gangubai Kathiawadi, The Kashmir Files, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 when even the much-anticipated movies like Laal Singh Chaddha failed to find footfall in theatres.Hence, the question arises,
Has the audience grown fed up with Hindi Cinema? or, Is the industry bankrolling on poor scripts?Have Telugu and Kannada films finally cracked the code into the mainstream? Do star fees need reassessment?
From left to right, Jersey, Dhaakad, & Bachchhan Pandey are some of the biggest flops of the year.Even star producers like Karan Johar think that star fees need reassessment. During an interview with Film Companion, Johar candidly pointed out how even new actors are demanding 30 Crores of fees only when they are a few films old. In general, it is certain all producers are thinking that some reassessment needs to be made.
The era of content-oriented filmsContent-oriented films seem to be the talk of the town since the onset of the OTT era. Many bankable stars are increasingly diverting towards OTT platforms to produce and even act in films that interest them. At the end of the day, it seems that the audience will never hesitate to dig into their pockets for entertainment, provided they know they are getting a return on their investment. What do you think?
