Qatar has amped up spending by 1,466.6% when compared to the 2nd most expensive FIFA World Cup (Brazil). But now we settle the question, Why did Qatar have to spend so much money to host the World Cup? There 2 main reasons;

    1. Lack of Infrastructure
    2. Being the Spotlight 1. Lack of Infrastructure Qatar won the bid to host the world cup back in 2010, this was the time when the middle east and the gulf countries were on the rise all thanks to cheap oil and natural gas, when Qatar bagged the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the tiny country barely had any amenities which could support a global event as big as the World Cup, So the only option they had was to build everything from scratch, this included the stadiums, commercial centers, transportation facilities, roads, etc.When talked to the locals of Qatar it was revealed that most of the renovated and world-class roads at present were made in the last 5-6 years, and the transportation facilities for the world cup were scaled up to a level that was unimaginable, right now there are more than 4000 buses employed across the city and the city has also used over 14,000 drivers to keep these buses running.The metro facility in Qatar is also said to be free for all football fans!Construction, transport, and roads. All of these were built up from scratch, one can only imagine how the costs climbed (actually you donu2019t need to imagine lol, it is 220 Billion Dollars).2. Being the Spotlight Qatar is a rich country, we know that but on the global stage theyu2019re still a small country that begs for attention, and hosting the FIFA World Cup was the best way to get almost the entire globe to focus on one tiny country. It is expected that the 2022 FIFA World Cup will have a viewership of 5 Billion people. Imagine having 5 Billion sets of eyeballs glued to their devices and watching your country host the World Cup, this is precisely what Qatar wanted, Qatar being in the spotlight meant that they could not mess up and they will go to great lengths to make sure their country looks the best among the rest, which meant Qatar had a price tag of 220 Billion Dollars. On the occasion of this FIFA World Cup.
