Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir claimed that Kohli was the only one who survived this lengthy dry spell and that none would have even been able to obtain an opportunity this long, regardless of how famous they are in the sport. On November 23, 2019, Kohli hit his 70th career century while leading India to a 136-run victory over Bangladesh in Kolkata in the first-ever pink ball Test.
Kohli has struggled to reach another three-figure total in 83 innings across all three formats of the game since then. With Kohli’s form dipping and showing signs of difficulty this year, hopes for another century began to fade. Having said that, Kohli made a fantastic comeback to the format, scoring two fifty-plus scores in the Asia Cup (against Hong Kong and Pakistan) before completing his 71st international century in the format he least expected to score in.
However, Gambhir admitted in an interview that Kohli received extraordinary support from team management and selectors over the course of these three years that no other cricketer would have received based on his previous achievements.

Three years is an extremely long time. It is not only for three months. And I’m not trying to be harsh on him, but he’s earned it simply because he’s had a lot of runs in the past. However, I don’t think any of the young batters would have survived in international cricket if they hadn’t scored a century in three years, Gambhir said.
Kohli is expected to play in the upcoming home series against Australia and South Africa before the Men in Blue depart for Australia for the T20 World Cup 2022 in October. What do you think about Gautam’s criticism of Virat?
