This poison was dispersed throughout Maharashtra, including the state’s capital. The police stated they were watching the speeches and would take action if they were proven to be propagating hate; moving the Supreme Court did not assist. Whilst the hatred is obvious to all, there hasn’t been any indication of action as of yet. Not a surprise, given that BJP leaders were present at these rallies.

The true tipping point, however, was the demolition of a Muslim religious edifice in Bombay on March 23. Raj Thackeray, the leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), demanded its destruction in his yearly Gudi Padwa speech; his instructions were promptly carried out the following day, the first day of the month of Ramzan. It made little difference that the trustees asserted the location was a 600-year-old registered property.
Shinde undoubtedly remembers the chaos of those times, while Fadnavis from Nagpur may not. But, from the way he threatened Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the Assembly last week: If he continues to insult Savarkar, it will be difficult for him to walk on the road, it’s obvious that he’s a Shiv Sainik of the old mould, one who, even as head of a state, cares naught about the potential fallout of his remarks. In that regard, Shinde has shown himself to be on par with the chief ministers of the BJP.
Fadnavis, who served as chief minister from 2014 to 2019, was interestingly incompatible with this model. But now he needs to show that Hindutva, not power, was the driving force behind overthrowing the Previous administration.

As Home Minister now, will Fadnavis accede to Raj Thackeray’s next demand that all illegal dargahs be demolished in the Muslim township of Mumbra, just outside Mumbai? The three-term NCP Member who will challenge Shinde in the next Assembly elections has long irked the BJP with his open support of’secular’ causes.
There will be tense days for Mumbai and Maharashtra as shady moves are made on the political chessboard.
