The England and Wales Cricket Board medical staff have been working closely with their counterparts in Chennai to manage Stokes’ workload ahead of the five-Test Ashes series against Australia in England starting in June.
Super Kings batting coach Hussey, who worked with Stokes during England’s victorious Twenty20 World Cup campaign in November, said he’d be looked after in the latest edition of the T20 spectacle IPL starting on Friday.
The Chennai and ECB physios are working closely together, the 47-year-old former Australian batsman Hussey told British news agency PA and ESPNcricinfo.
He (Stokes) is ready to go from the start as a batsman, in bowling you have to wait and see what happens. I know he played a light bowl this week for the first time since the injections in his knee.
I expect he won’t bowl much in the first few games of the tournament, or it could be a couple of weeks, I’m not 100 percent sure. But I hope he’ll be able to play again at some point during the tournament
Hussey, who has played 79 Test matches, jokingly pointed to Stokes’ importance to England in the Ashes, saying, From an Australian point of view, I hope he bowls 20 or 30 overs in the nets.source: news nationWe’ll run him into the ground and I’ll make sure he does extra strength exercises and runs to put a strain on his body. I was only joking, of course, insisted Hussey, who will coach the Welsh team during the Hundreds Championship in English cricket later this year.
I want a fit Ben Stokes to play his best cricket for the Ashes. I want both teams to give their best and go for it and I think it’ll be an incredible series to watch. He’ll be huge for us (at Chennai) as well, especially if we can get him to bowl.
