The places that experienced violence were either TMC or BJP strongholds (Rishra in Serampur Lok Sabha seat) or areas where the BJP finished first in the 2019 general elections (Howrah and Dalkhola in Raiganj constituencies).

The Sagardighi byelection outcome presented a challenge to both the TMC and the BJP since it demonstrated that the bipolar politics that both parties find advantageous may be overturned.
