After Gukesh’s perpetual check, the first game of the new match ended in a draw. He emerged victorious by winning the following match. Both Gukesh and Abdusattorov have qualified for September’s Armageddon Grand Finale.
In addition to Abdusattorov, the 16-year-old Indian defeated former world champion Vladimir Kramnik, Daniil Dubov, Yangyi Yu (China), Vidit Gujrathi and Karthikeyan Murali (both India), and Param Maghsoodloo (Iran).

Former world champion Viswanathan Anand praised the accomplishment of the young GM. Each day of the tournament, two blitz games and, if necessary, an Armageddon game were played (five minutes for White, four for Black).
Armageddon is a variant of blitz chess in which a winner is determined after a series of drawn games. A draw in the Armageddon is considered a victory for Black.
