During the India-Australia Test series in February-March, fans were outraged by the lack of clean toilets at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. It is unsurprising that Delhi is one of the five venues that have undergone a GAP assessment by the BCCI.
The other venues, according to the list obtained by PTI, are Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mohali, and Mumbai. The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai was renovated prior to the India-Australia One-Day Internationals last month after a fan complained about the stadium’s poor sanitary conditions.
Hundreds of billions of rupee, The renovation of the five venues is expected to cost hundreds of crores. Even without considering the cost of roof renovation, which is not an option in Delhi due to structural flaws at the venue, the costs are enormous.
The Delhi stadium will cost 100 crore, Hyderabad will cost 117.17 crore, Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens will cost 127.47 crore, Mohali’s ageing PCA stadium will cost 79.46 crore, and Wankhede will cost 78.82 crore. When roof work is involved, the costs skyrocket.
The following cities have been shortlisted to host World Cup games: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Indore, Rajkot, and Mumbai.
The 46-day ICC event will feature 48 games in total. India last hosted the ODI World Cup in 2011, when the team led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the trophy.
