Immediately following Islamabad’s announcement that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari would be leading a team to India, the first by any Pakistani foreign minister since 2011, the heinous attack took place. Additionally, it would mark Nawaz Sharif’s first high-level travel to India since the swearing-in of Prime Minister Modi in 2014.

    Ironically, Pakistan’s military ministry highlighted the potential of a full-scale war with India as one of the primary security-related obstacles preventing the government from holding provincial elections on the same day in a report presented to the nation’s highest court.
    Although the counter-insurgency grid in the Kashmir valley proved effective, the Army Chief acknowledged in January that there had been instances of infiltration attempts in regions south of the Pir Panjal range. It is a tragic loss that five soldiers were killed in the Rajouri sector. 
    The shift in terrorist organisations’ strategies indicates a growing difficulty for the security apparatus. Finding the culprits is the first duty. There will soon be updated regulations for troop movement, search activities, and the use of counterterrorism tools.
    The attack happened close to the location of a lengthy encounter that took place in 2021. The terrorists evaded a thorough search and managed to escape.

    The threat posed by cross-border aid to terrorism and its infrastructure is still very real. The Poonch incident serves as a stark reminder that the scourge of terrorism requires constant, vigilant observation and countermeasures in the wake of the January slaughter of people in a Rajouri village. It will be difficult to foil any attempts to sabotage the event as Srinagar prepares to host a working group meeting of G20 tourism representatives in the final week of May.
