It was an arduous assignment for party chairman Mallikarjun Kharge to select the party’s leader after newly elected MLAs gave him permission to do so. Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar actively made their claims for the top position.

Despite being the less experienced competitor, Shivakumar had shown no signs of giving up. Shivakumar, who represents the party, asserted that everything is well and will be well after the contentious matter appeared to have been peacefully settled.
Siddaramaiah, who held the position of CM from 2013 to 2018, is unquestionably the best candidate. He must meet the demands of the voters in Karnataka, who have given the Congress a resounding mandate. The BJP, which had taken office in 2019 following the overthrow of the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) administration, was ultimately defeated by the corruption stain as well as the anti-incumbency factor. Therefore, it is essential that the Congress maintain honest and open government. This time, the party is in a strong position since it is not constrained by coalition demands.
The onus is on Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar to cooperate, and the high command must take the initiative to resolve any potential conflicts that may arise between them. In Rajasthan, where CM Ashok Gehlot and former Deputy CM Sachin Pilot are still at odds months before the Assembly polls, the Congress must avoid the mistakes it has made there. Additionally, there are unrest rumblings in Chhattisgarh, another party-ruled state that is headed for the polls.

The effectiveness of the Congress’s Karnataka administration will have an impact on its chances of being the main opposition party in the general election of 2024. The grand old party might suffer at the national level from a sloppy performance in the southern state, leaving the opposition in no position to challenge the BJP.
