Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir – Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti, has expressed her discontent and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of hijacking the upcoming G20 Summit scheduled to be held in Jammu and Kashmir. Mufti’s remarks come amid growing political tensions and debates surrounding the event’s significance and its implications for the region.
In a press conference held today, Mehbooba Mufti voiced her concerns about the G20 Summit being used as a political tool by the BJP to further its agenda in Jammu and Kashmir. She criticized the central government for what she perceived as an attempt to divert attention from the core issues faced by the region and instead focus on showcasing its political prowess.

The former Chief Minister raised questions about the timing and purpose of holding the summit in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in light of the ongoing political and security challenges faced by the region. She stressed the need for addressing the core issues related to governance, human rights, and the aspirations of the local population before showcasing Jammu and Kashmir on the global stage.
Mehbooba Mufti further expressed her apprehension that the G20 Summit might be utilized as a platform to project a false sense of normalcy in the region while the ground realities and grievances of the local population remain unaddressed. She called for meaningful engagement with the people of Jammu and Kashmir and a focus on resolving the political stalemate through dialogue and inclusive processes.
The BJP-led central government has not yet responded to Mufti’s remarks. However, the ruling party has consistently maintained that the G20 Summit in Jammu and Kashmir will provide a significant boost to the region’s economy and global exposure. They argue that hosting such a high-profile event in the region will attract international attention, promote tourism, and create opportunities for economic development.
The upcoming G20 Summit, scheduled for later this year, has already generated considerable excitement and speculation in Jammu and Kashmir. While the central government and its supporters view it as a landmark event that showcases the region’s potential, critics like Mufti express reservations about the underlying political motives and the urgency to address the genuine concerns of the local population.
As the debate surrounding the G20 Summit in Jammu and Kashmir intensifies, the focus remains on the need for inclusive dialogue, addressing grievances, and finding lasting solutions that prioritize the well-being and aspirations of the people of the region. The political discourse surrounding the event underscores the complex challenges and aspirations that Jammu and Kashmir continues to grapple with.
