China has not missed an occasion to criticise the 2019 repeal of Article 370 and the state’s partition, despite New Delhi’s righteous insistence that Jammu & Kashmir is and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India.

Ironically, a nation known for annexing its neighbours’ land is worried about ‘disputed’ areas. The Lok Sabha was informed by the Ministry of External Affairs in February of last year that China had been occupying around 38,000 square kilometres of Indian land in the UT of Ladakh illegally for the previous sixty years.
The ministry said that Pakistan gave China 5,180 sq km of unlawfully acquired Indian territory in the Shaksgam valley as part of the 1963 China-Pakistan Boundary Agreement, which India has never accepted.
It is clear that Beijing has little regard for India’s territorial integrity given that the high-stakes Belt and Road Initiative, a global, multimodal infrastructure development project, traverses through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The Kashmir conflict, according to China, should be settled in line with the UN Charter, Security Council resolutions, and bilateral agreements, the country has emphasised on several occasions.

The track record of Beijing respecting agreements with India is dismal. India has sent a clear message to China that the foundation of their bilateral relations had been undermined by their breach of these accords.
The boycott of the G20 summit demonstrates how lowly China would go in order to work with Pakistan. However, India’s credentials as the G20 president have been strengthened rather than weakened by Beijing’s own goal.
