Separatists who have relocated overseas have maintained the ’cause’ by making incendiary remarks and sponsoring it. After receiving sanctuary there during the dark days of terrorism in Punjab, nations like Canada and the US became safe havens for separatists.

It’s interesting to note that over time, the Blue Star memory ceremony in India, particularly in Amritsar, has gotten more sensible. The Akal Takht made a plea for a reform campaign in areas where drug misuse and other social ills are prevalent this year.
It appears that many Punjabis have moved on and support peace. The situation on the ground is not consistent with the Sikh diaspora’s attempts to maintain separatist radicalism. The political elites of Canada cannot avoid responsibility for supporting extremism in an effort to increase their support bases.
The event, according to MEA, S. Jaishankar, had a larger underlying issue about the space which is given to separatists, extremists, and people who advocate violence. Jaishankar has properly criticised Canada for this.

Early this year, out of worry over the security lapse at the Indian High Commission in the UK, India had warned that extremists from Khalistan were abusing their refugee status to support and facilitate terrorism in India. Such disturbances also run counter to the initiatives taken by the Canadian and British governments to strengthen their bilateral ties with India.
