After the two physicians claimed that the women had been raped and murdered, public outrage erupted, leading to violent demonstrations that lasted for over 15 days after the remains of the victims were discovered in a creek in Shopian on May 30, 2009.
The demonstrators, organised by the alliance of separatist organisations known as Majlis-e-Mushawarat, blamed the security forces for the heinous atrocities, and the widespread unrest in J&K even put the then-coalition NC-Congress administration led by then-CM Omar Abdullah in jeopardy.
Five police officers were detained in relation to this. The physicians and separatists’ attempts to undermine the Indian state by falsely charging the security forces of rape and murder appeared to have been successful, but only for a short period of time.
