The move to appease Pilot is undoubtedly made in an effort to deter him from hurting the party’s chances of winning the desert state’s elections. Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Mizoram are the other four of the five states that will hold elections later this year. Rajasthan will also hold elections.

The Congress is hoping for a repeat performance after defeating the BJP in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh during the 2018 Assembly elections. Its aim and capacity to lead INDIA, the recently established Opposition alliance, in the 2024 General Election would be influenced by how well it does in these three Hindi-belt states.
In the grand scheme of things, according to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, the G23 rumblings appear to have taken a back seat. Mukul Wasnik, Anand Sharma, and Shashi Tharoor, who were among the 23 dissident leaders that wrote to Sonia Gandhi, the party’s then-president, to express their displeasure with the leadership, have been accepted as regular CWC members. In defiance of the party’s long-standing custom of selecting a consensus candidate, Tharoor ran against Kharge for the position of Congress chief last year.
