After more than a decade of discussions with the stakeholders, it has acquired solid legislative form. In an effort to maintain its hegemony, Apple had been fighting against it. In 2012, it developed the lightning charger. But as evidenced by its most recent models, the corporation made the conversion to USB-C considerably earlier than the 2024 deadline, in a heartening backpedal and recognition of its sizable market base in the EU.

The chargers’ compatibility with different devices is intended to simplify users’ lives in addition to helping them save money and reduce their amount of electronic waste. It is significant since these electronic devices, at the very least the basic models, are turning into more and more necessary products.
India has set a deadline of March 2025 for switching to the USB-C standard charging port in recognition of this need. This choice will reduce the production of e-waste by connectors given the country’s enormous population and aggressive drive toward digital payments (nearly 10 billion UPI transactions were made in August alone, setting a new record for the nation).

When users of different manufacturers upgrade their devices and choose USB-C instead of older chargers and cables, the amount of charger-wire waste may initially increase, but in the long run, this policy will be beneficial.
