While giving Narges this prestigious award will help to raise awareness of the injustice and atrocities that women endure in Iran, it is equally important that the world, especially the Global North, pushes for gender equality everywhere and avoids taking a position driven by self-serving interests.

In some of these countries, there are obvious double standards used to defend women’s hijab wearing in the guise of individual freedom or preference.The honour should encourage women to advocate for their rights with more vigour.

It’s interesting to note that Narges was motivated by Shirin Ebadi, a fellow countrywoman and human rights crusader who won the 2003 Nobel Prize for peace. The decision for 2023, however, has been scorned by Iran since it reeks of the interventionist and anti-Iran policies of some European countries. Narges has been imprisoned for 31 years by the Iranian dictatorship; she has been detained 13 times and found guilty five times.
She had spearheaded a statewide demonstration by rebellious women over the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody in the most recent conflict that resulted in her imprisonment in 2022; unsurprisingly, the authorities had ruthlessly put an end to the agitation.
