However, the best measures to address them are not implemented, which has an impact on society, the economy, health, and life. In unknown ways, climate change is making air pollution and extreme weather worse.

Last week, Delhi’s air quality unexpectedly returned to poor levels after plummeting to very poor levels due to wind-driven particles of carbon, dust, smog, and other pollutants choking the city. However, the city and North India are expected to endure a protracted night of suffering during the upcoming winter. With an air quality index of 346 this week, Delhi has the worst pollution out of 110 cities monitored for air quality worldwide. This month, Mumbai has not experienced a single day of excellent air. For most of the winters of both last year and this year, the air quality index was either very low or poor.
The purifying sea wind and the cleansing monsoon that once characterised Mumbai’s position are no longer able to maintain pure air. The two cities’ growing pollution levels have similar causes. These include the growing number of automobilesu2014particularly diesel vehiclesu2014construction projects, coal-fired power plants, and enterprises that produce pollution. Damage is increased by fireworks from festivals and rubbish burning.

There is the particular problem of farm stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana in the case of Delhi. Despite numerous tries, no solution to the issue has been discovered thus far. Although awareness campaigns and measures based on rewards, punishments, and disincentives have been undertaken, they have only partially addressed the issue.
Although both cities have precise and in-depth plans to address pollution, they haven’t been able to lessen the problem as of yet. Mumbai has a pollution mitigation plan, and Delhi has a graded response action plan. In many other cities as well, air pollution poses a major threat to the standard of living. India holds the dubious distinction of being home to 22 out of the world’s 30 most polluted cities. The fact that the situation is getting worse in spite of the plans and measures for prevention and correction is concerning.
