The matter is shrouded in mystery because the accusations against the Indian nationals have not been made public by New Delhi or the Qatari authorities. The company had been providing the government of Qatar with advisory services on the purchase of submarines. The concerning development occurs in the midst of Israel and Hamas’ fierce conflict in the Gaza Strip. An key player is Qatar, which has a history of sponsoring and housing the highest leaders of Hamas.
Doha is positioning itself as a go-between in the negotiations for the hostage-release of Israelis and the facilitation of the delivery of humanitarian supplies to Gaza’s civilian population. In addition to the complexity of the relationship between Israel and Qatar, India must exercise caution given its amicable relations with both countries. One of the richest countries in the world, Qatar, is home to almost 8,00,000 Indians who work there, making it an even more difficult diplomatic task for New Delhi.
Following Canada’s accusations regarding the involvement of Indian government operatives in the assassination of designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, India is already dealing with the anger and pressure of the West. Such conflicts may harm India’s standing internationally. Care must be taken with the Qatar case. In the sake of justice, India’s top priority should be to request a new trial; if that fails, it should attempt to get the death penalty commuted.
