Notably, all South Asian countries except for India supported the resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. India was the only one among the 11 members of BRICS Plus to abstain. Along with the US and Canada, New Delhi made a futile attempt to dilute the already watered-down resolution.

The resolution has political weight even though it is not legally binding. It once again brought to light how alone the US and Israel are when it comes to the Palestine issue. India had been voting on each of these resolutions alongside the majority of the world until this abstention. The US and Israel were always on the other side.
This time, India may say that it chose the middle ground. However, even this calls into question its steadfast support for Palestine. India wanted to make sure that Hamas was named in the text expressly, according to the official reason.

However, the Palestinian people do not represent Hamas; over 8,000 of them have died in Gaza this month, and there are an estimated 2 million who are just trying to survive. India’s hesitation to take on the US and its allies head-on protects its current approach of looking to the West for assistance in boosting trade, obtaining cutting-edge technology, and withstanding pressure from China.
Notwithstanding India’s justification, the abstention served to divert public backlash over the death penalty imposed on former Navy personnel in Qatar. However, as the battle moves into a deadlier phase and involves more nations, the world will only be spared its deadly consequences if there is a ceasefire in Gaza.
