The report from the US company was released just a few months after the Digital Personal Data Protection statute was passed in India. The statute allows for the processing of digital personal data in a way that respects both the need to process data for legitimate purposes and the right of individuals to have their data protected.
It is concerning that in 2022, data breach incidents revealed 2.29 billion records globally, with 20% of those records coming from India. The administration denied media claims in June of this year that claimed the Health Ministry’s Co-WIN portal had compromised the data of Covid vaccination users.

India still has a long way to go in terms of data protection, since hackers typically manage to stay one step ahead of the game. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) should offer cybersecurity solutions that can stop such situations from happening again in addition to looking into data breaches.
People who naively divulge their personal information to governmental and commercial organisations require complete security against identity theft, internet fraud, and other types of cybercrime. It is hoped that Resecurity’s warning would prompt actions to improve data security. We will find out sooner rather than later if the most recent legislation contains sufficient safeguards to address the new threats and challenges.
