The US will continue to compete vigorously with China, but we will manage that competition responsibly so that it doesn’t veer into conflict or accidental conflict, Biden said bluntly to the media following the meeting. In his speech to a group of US CEOs, Xi struck a conciliatory note, stating that cooperation between China and the US was necessary and that it was wrong to view China as a threat and play a zero-sum game against it.

After the US downed a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon in February, the two countries’ relations reached a new low. Despite Beijing’s protests and warnings, China had cut off inter-military contact last year following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.
Since Biden has urged China to exercise moderation in its military operations in and around the strait, Taiwan remains a contentious topic. He also expressed alarm over China’s alleged violations of human rights in Tibet, Xinjiang, and Hong Kong.

Despite Biden’s infuriating remarks that Xi is a tyrant, the meeting suggests both the US and China are open to taking a practical approach to ease bilateral tensions. Both are putting their interests first and making an effort to come to an understanding while still being aware of their differences.
For India, which has been engaged in a protracted confrontation with China in Ladakh, these developments are significant. Beijing has an added duty to keep the peace and stability in its neighbourhood, since New Delhi’s close connections to the United States do not affect its other bilateral partnerships.
