Approximately 5,000 citizens fled to Mizoram, which borders Myanmar by a porous 510 km stretch, following a recent outbreak of violence in the neighbouring nation. As per the Mizoram police, most of them had gone back to their native Myanmar.

    This north eastern state, which held elections on November 7 and will elect a new government early in December, is going through a crucial moment. It is possible that groups hostile to India may attempt to use the chaos in Myanmar as a pretext to instigate unrest in Mizoram and other Northeastern states. 
    Over 180 lives have been lost in ethnic violence in neighbouring Manipur over the past six months; in the most recent episode, two people were killed in a firefight between rival factions in Kangpokpi district on Monday.

    Following airstrikes along the border between India and Myanmar, New Delhi has called for an end to violence and emphasised the significance of resolving the dispute via constructive discussion and assisting an early return of peace, stability, and democracy in Myanmar. Following the military junta’s takeover of the government in a coup in February 2021, the nation has been experiencing a civil war. 
    India’s security and geopolitical interests need it to closely monitor the events. Additionally, New Delhi needs to be aware that in recent weeks, the military of Myanmar has lost control of a portion of the border with China. India cannot afford to lower its guard, given Beijing’s dual role as a hostile neighbour and significant participant in the region.
