Vaishnaw met with a range of stakeholders, including social media platform representatives and AI experts, one day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concerns about the potential negative effects of AI, especially deepfake technology. During his speech at the G20 Virtual Summit, the Prime Minister emphasised that international cooperation is necessary to develop international AI legislation.
The identification of deep fakes, stopping the dissemination of such information, bolstering reporting channels, and increasing public awareness are the four main areas of concentration for the action plan that the government is creating. In addition to endangering the privacy of well-known individuals, deepfake technology can be used to incite unrest, disseminate false information and fake news, and endanger national security.

With almost 80 crore Internet users, India is particularly vulnerable. During elections, deepfakes can be a deadly weapon used to settle political scores and deceive voters. One useful disincentive is to impose severe sanctions on the site that hosts the deep fake as well as the developer.
Together, the government and business community must create responsible AI” that protects society from negative influences and advances the common good. The general population is also crucial in thwarting deep fakes. People need to be made aware of the dangers of blindly forwarding or spreading material on social media.
