After decades of MNF or Congress dominance, the northeastern state is entering a new era with the ZPM’s resounding victory (27 seats out of 40) in the Assembly elections.
Strong anti-incumbency sentiment caused the MNF to wither, as both Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia and Chief Minister Zoramthanga lost their seats.The result has dealt the Congress party more damage, only one day after it experienced dramatic losses in the Hindi core.
The party’s presence in the Northeast has drastically decreased recently. The Congress won five seats in the 2018 elections, while the BJP only managed to gain one. This time, the BJP has further hurt the Congress, which was once a formidable force in the state, by taking two seats, one more than the ancient party.
Even though the MNF—not the ZPM—is a component of the BJP-led NDA, the BJP, which has been gaining ground quickly in the Northeast, has declared that it will be a member of the new regime.Remarkably, Mizoram is the only state in the northeastern region where the BJP does not currently hold power either alone or in coalition.

Mizoram is dealing with numerous issues. It is experiencing a severe financial crisis. The surge of refugees from Myanmar, where a civil war has been raging for the previous 2.5 years, is another issue the authorities are dealing with. In addition, Mizoram has been on edge due to the unstable situation in the BJP-ruled neighbouring state of Manipur, where ethnic conflicts broke out in May. The new administration has its job cut out for it.
