On Tuesday, Bhajan Lal Sharma, a new MLA, was chosen to be the chief minister of Rajasthan.Unexpected selections made by the BJP indicate a generational change. The party has successfully facilitated the handoff of authority in the states from the old guard to the new leadership.

Senior politician Shivraj Singh Chouhan led Madhya Pradesh’s anti-incumbency movement to victory and was chief minister for four terms. Vasundhara Raje of Rajasthan and Raman Singh of Chhattisgarh held the position of chief minister for two and three terms, respectively.
The message from the high command was fairly direct: transfer the torch in the party’s best interests. Notably, Chouhan suggested Yadav for the CM position, whereas Raje supported Sharma and Raman Singh did the same for Sai.Due to the delay in appointing the chief ministers, the Congress took advantage of the opportunity to criticise the BJP for alleged factionalism and quickly installed Revanth Reddy as the new chief minister of Telangana.

Nonetheless, the BJP’s ability to gradually forge agreement on the new chief ministers highlights the cohesiveness of its organisation. Now, more than ever, the top brass must make sure the regional satraps stay on board, as they will be crucial to the Lok Sabha election campaign of the following year.The party is counting on internal unity to make an encore after losing the three states to the Congress in 2018. The party had won Chhattisgarh, MP, and Rajasthan in the 2019 parliamentary elections. The novice CMs can also benefit from the veterans’ governance experience.
