According to the government of Mohamed Muizzu, the ministers’ individual opinions do not reflect the government’s. Perhaps that is insufficient for New Delhi.

The Ministry of External Affairs has called the Maldives High Commissioner in response to the ministers’ remarks regarding the prime minister’s video that promotes tourism in Lakshadweep. Given the evident anti-Indian tone in the since-deleted social media messages, Male appears to be expected to make a more forceful statement.

It is believed that President Muizzu is close to China. He called for the evacuation of Indian military personnel from the island nation as one of his first moves as president. The recent dispute represents a new low in the two countries’ relationship.

In response, a number of Indians—including celebrities—have announced that they are cancelling their travel plans. A domestic travel agency has chosen to discontinue accepting reservations for the Maldives, citing nationalistic sentiment as above individual interests.

Although that might be viewed as an overreaction, it emphasises the necessity of setting boundaries for behaviour that is inappropriate. It also acknowledges the significance of the wealthy, spending-obsessed Indian tourists who travel the world in large numbers. Some residents of the island nation believe that Prime Minister Modi is attempting to lure visitors away from the well-known Maldives with his visit to Lakshadweep.

For both the tourism sector and the travellers, a competitive spirit can work wonders, but maintaining a sense of realism is essential. There isn’t enough infrastructure or support system in Lakshadweep to meet the demand from tourists. Maintaining its delicate ecological balance is equally important. Though normalisation of relations must be the ultimate objective, India’s strong opposition to Male is not without justification.
