While a complete investigation is necessary to fully understand the error, it is apparent that border tensions have not decreased since the June 2020 Galwan confrontation. According to a Pentagon study from the previous year, China planned to build further infrastructure along the LAC in 2022, including “multiple helipads, a second bridge over the Pangong lake, and underground storage facilities near Doklam.”
The LAC situation, according to Army Chief Gen. Manoj Pande, is “stable but sensitive.” In the midst of a protracted impasse, India cannot afford to let its defences down. Continuous monitoring is necessary to prevent any mishap on the part of the PLA. China wants to force India to blink first in order to win tactical advantage.
