To the dismay of the West, New Delhi has declined to reduce its level of involvement with Moscow. Jaishankar noted that Russia/USSR had never harmed India’s interests in its post-independence history.

While there have been ups and downs in the relationships between different nations throughout the years, India and Russia have maintained a steady and cordial relationship. India’s hesitancy to denounce Russia for its incursion into Ukraine is attributed to two things: energy supplies and military weapons.

These have undoubtedly had a significant impact on the nation’s viewpoint, even though the history of strong bilateral relations is sometimes overlooked. Russia/USSR has supported India for 67 years by using its veto power in the UN Security Council to stop any conversation about the “India-Pakistan question” in relation to Kashmir. India’s Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation with the Soviet Union and Moscow’s threat to strike China if it attempted to intervene contributed to Pakistan’s fragmentation in 1971.

India has provided diplomatic support to Russia during the last two years of the conflict in Ukraine. One such document is the New Delhi Declaration, which was drafted during the G20 Summit held in India.

Russia was pleased that its position was left out of the text, while the West was pleased that its position was taken into consideration. India is a prime option to arbitrate the Russia-Ukraine dispute because of its capacity to strike a balance between the goals of both sides. However, as Jaishankar stated, India will not lead the way in this area. For the time being, India will be happy to extend its special connection into additional areas with Russia, knowing that there won’t be any animosity or betrayal.
