The Prime Minister attacked the Congress manifesto, claiming that the opposition party intended to distribute people’s hard-earned cash and assets to “those who have more children” and “ghuspaithiye,” or infiltrators.

He also made an unintentional reference to the 2006 declaration made by then-prime minister Manmohan Singh that Muslims and the weaker groups had the “first claim” to the nation’s resources. Several opposition parties have called for the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take action against the PM, labelling his remarks as “hate speech.”

The comments, according to the Congress, were hateful, polarising, and directed towards a specific religious group. The sour controversy has increased the likelihood that over the next few weeks, campaign speeches will grow more caustic and abrasive.

Senior party leaders have a responsibility to provide a good example and refrain from crossing any lines. Considering each complaint and countercomplaint on its merits and making decisions in a fair and independent manner are two of the ECI’s biggest challenges. Politicians frequently let their prejudices or emotions get the better of them during election season.

In April 2019, Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader, reportedly questioned why Modi’s surname was widespread among “thieves” at an election rally in Karnataka. He was in danger after making the offensive remark because BJP MLA Purnesh Modi launched a criminal defamation lawsuit against him.

Rahul’s membership in the Lok Sabha was finally lost, and it wasn’t until the Supreme Court delayed his sentence in August of last year that it was reinstated. The court had issued a warning, stating that the claimed remarks were not in good taste. It is expected of someone in public life to use some restraint when speaking in front of an audience. This wise counsel should be followed by PM Modi and the leaders of the opposition, and they should abstain from any actions that jeopardise social harmony and peace.
