The BJP, which is running in the state’s Lok Sabha elections in coalition with the JD(S), and the ruling Congress in Karnataka are engaged in a verbal sparring match over the alleged sexual exploitation of numerous women, which is depicted in about 3,000 video clips that are making the rounds on social media.

In the meantime, Prajwal’s father, HD Revanna, is being held on allegations of molestation and kidnapping. To further investigate the matter, the state government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

While claiming that there should be no tolerance for individuals such as Prajwal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also said that the Congress government is allowing the MP to leave the nation.Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has promised that his government will not tamper with the investigation, but the SIT still has a difficult task ahead of it: conducting an objective and independent investigation.

Getting the victims—who were recognized from the video clips—to come forward and file complaints would not be simple. Reports state that for the last ten or so days, a number of women who were purportedly the victims of sexual abuse have moved out of their homes in Hassan district, which is home to the Deve Gowda family.

After their identities were made public, angry women are reportedly leaving because of fear and social disgrace. Interestingly, HD Revanna is charged with kidnapping a woman in an effort to keep her away from the SIT.

The state government must make sure that victims have the guts to speak up and that threats and pressure do not intimidate or discourage them from speaking. The pursuit of justice should put their protection first. It is necessary to bring the missing MP, against whom a Blue Corner warning has been issued, confront the legal system.
