Tuesday morning at the Delhi airport, tissue paper with the message “bomb@5.30” scribbled on it was discovered in the in-flight restroom of an IndiGo aircraft. As soon as possible, the authorities began a search and evacuated the passengers and crew.

Even though there is an ongoing inquiry, nothing suspicious was discovered. The event happened the day after a message alleging that bombs had been put at the Mumbai airport and Hotel Taj Mahal was sent to the Mumbai traffic police via WhatsApp. Both locations yielded nothing after a thorough examination.

Bomb threat emails have shaken many institutions in Delhi-NCR, Kanpur, Lucknow, Jaipur, Kolkata, and other places in recent months. Investigative agencies have a difficult task ahead of them: they must identify the people or groups engaged in these criminal operations, as well as their locations and any commonalities that may exist between these threats, which cannot be written off as simple mischief.

The IP address of emails addressed to about 150 schools has been tracked by the Delhi Police to Budapest, Hungary. Threatening emails were received earlier this month to hospitals, the IGI Airport, and Tihar Jail in Delhi. The source of the emails has been identified as a mailing service firm with headquarters in Cyprus. The current investigation into a number of cases suggests that foreign-based cybercrime gangs are easily inflicting broad disruptions in India.

It appears that they are collaborating with criminals who are based in India. Being complacent is not an option, particularly in light of the Lok Sabha elections. Bomb detection and disposal teams should be provided in every city with the necessary equipment. It is important to create and carry out a thorough action plan in order to minimise the chaos and fear brought on by the threats. After all, not every email, contact, or message may turn out to be a scam, so everyone involved needs to be ready for the worst.
