Although they have been read to apply to all public figures and political workers, it is clear that the allusions are meant specifically to the Bharatiya Janata Party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Despite the RSS’s belief that it is above politics, the BJP is its primary political organisation and has given it both organisational and intellectual backing. Bhagwat’s remarks represent the first public release of an internal assessment of the BJP’s performance and behaviour.

The BJP and the RSS are known to have had disagreements, as evidenced by party president J P Nadda’s recent statement that the party is independent of the RSS. When Bhagwat states that a true sevak works without hurting others and lacks ahankar (ego/arrogance), there can’t be many possible meanings. The Gita’s ring can only be associated with targeted wisdom, as the precept “a true sevak maintains decorum… The one who maintains decorum and does his work, but remains unattached, only such a person is sevak” states.

Prime Minister Modi has referred to himself as the Pradhan Sevak of the nation.During the BJP’s Modi-centric campaign, there were numerous instances of politicians like Modi going against decorum, and a great deal of arrogance was evident. Viewed in the context of the haughty calls for a “Congress-mukt Bharat” and the confrontational politics of the BJP under Modi, the assertion that the Opposition should not be treated as an enemy and the focus on the necessity of consensus-building should be considered.

The assertion that leaders delivered speeches without considering the potential for societal division was intended to express even the RSS’s disapproval of the shallow communal campaign that Modi personally engaged in. Speaking about Manipur, Bhagwat implied that the state had been waiting for peace for more than a year, which was a blatant criticism of the way the government had handled the situation there.

Bhagwat’s remarks may be pertinent to everyone, but the BJP in particular should take particular note of them. Although he did not give names, these concepts have been developed, and the BJP has been identified in pieces that have appeared in RSS publications. According to one story, BJP workers and leaders were “happy in their bubble” and overconfident.

Furthermore, by claiming that the BJP had not approached the RSS for support during the polls, it distanced the RSS from the party’s electoral defeat. In the past, when the BJP was weak and failing, the RSS has also criticised the party. It is also well known that the organisation never felt at ease when certain leaders thought they were superior to it. Bhagwat’s remarks have been made previously and by others. The fact that he made these remarks in his capacity as RSS chairman gives them significance.
