Following the inauguration of the new NDA government led by the BJP, this was the first bilateral state visit by a foreign leader. The agreements that New Delhi and Dhaka inked addressed a wide range of topics, including digital partnership, healthcare, defence manufacturing, space sector, railway connectivity, maritime cooperation, and the blue economy.
Recalling the role played by the Indian government and people in her country’s 1971 freedom, she described India as a reliable friend and big neighbour of Bangladesh. Over the past ten years, Modi and Hasina have gotten along well, going beyond their shared past. As a result, the two countries’ connections have become stronger.

Prior to the national elections in November of last year, Hasina was under pressure from the US and the Bangladeshi opposition. PM Modi accompanied her to essentially inaugurate three development projects. This had significantly boosted Hasina’s campaign for the polls.India’s decision to send a technical team to Bangladesh for a massive project to safeguard the Teesta river was a significant learning from last week’s discussion.
Despite New Delhi’s misgivings, China, which makes no attempt to court or threaten India’s neighbours, has its eye on the projected $1 billion project. When Hasina is anticipated to visit China the following month, her cordial relationship with India will be put to the test. Conversely, India is not in the mood to balance on a thin line.
