The Opposition’s increased confidence during the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha is one obvious shift.
With a LoP and a robust number after a decade, the leaders appear committed to demonstrating a clear objective and establishing a level playing field. Although it’s too soon to make judgments, the first few sittings have been very different from the past, when the Treasury Benches would dominate the conversation and drown out the voices of the opposition.

In a counterattack, the Prime Minister questioned the Congress’s confrontational stance in Parliament by claiming that it had won 99 seats out of 543, not 100. To his credit, Rahul Gandhi has established the opposition’s tone. He and the other members of the INDIA bloc can certainly congratulate themselves on leaving their mark.
The opposition gives the fight for accountability in governance much-needed vigour by calling out injustices and pointing out gaps in policies. There is still a warning. Truths are untouchable. Sure, voice opposition, but only if supported by data and analysis rather than rumours. Otherwise, even the most excellent presentations may become a self-indulgent exercise.

After the exciting election results, the Opposition ranks have been chanting, “Be strong, do not fear.” They must always keep in mind that they have the unstoppable, fierce Mahua Moitra on their side if they ever feel the slightest bit of self-doubt.
