Putin may or may not have taken offense at the prime minister’s claim that the slaughter of defenseless children was heartbreaking and agonizing, given that Modi’s visit to Moscow demonstrated to all parties involved that he is not and has not been isolated since the war’s beginning. Putin nevertheless showed compassion in acknowledging Modi’s attempts to find a solution to the Ukraine problem.
A strong message to the US-led Western bloc was also conveyed by the PM on his first bilateral visit of his third term: India will continue to work with Russia to strengthen their “special and privileged” strategic partnership, even in the face of potential sanctions. Reluctantly acknowledging this reality on the ground, the US has stated that it will keep India in mind as a strategic ally even while it is concerned about Delhi’s connections to Russia.
