A few months before the election, friends, family, and fellow Democrats are pleading with an ageing president who appears to be struggling with his memory to resign following a disastrous first-round debate with Republican Party opponent Donald Trump. For the sake of democracy and the party, they want him to step down.
The appeals have only gotten stronger due to his determination to continue because he is “most qualified” to beat Trump. Senior Democrats and financial backers are reportedly uniting behind Vice President Kamala Harris as the most likely replacement. After the NATO 75th anniversary summit, Biden gave a news conference that became a worldwide test of his mental capabilities.
His goal was to prove to everyone that he was capable of defeating Trump and taking over as the most powerful person in the world for the next four years. However, the worries have not been allayed by his hour-long performance, in which he answered spontaneous questions without the assistance of aides.

During the NATO meeting, he mispronounced the names of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also called Harris “Vice-President Trump” during the press conference. If he doesn’t go with dignity, he might have to leave. An official presidential candidate is chosen by the party convention.August is when the Democrats have their convention, and Biden might suffer humiliation if he hasn’t resigned by then.
Seeing a democracy in action like this—a party publicly battling with its nominee for leader and the media ridiculing him and casting doubt on his competence to guide a superpower—is interesting. The “mother of democracy” is not the kind of place where the prime minister never responds to a question without planning, not from favourable media at least, much less during a news conference.Beyond the spectacle, global events originating in the US have an impact on other countries.

Under Trump, authoritarian dictators would have the ideal means of self-justification everywhere. But the uncertainty of a Trump presidency might be too much for even authoritarians to handle. Notwithstanding the Modi-Trump chemistry, India enjoyed a significant improvement in relations under the Biden administration, despite the Pannun issue and other hiccups.
A Trump reelection would be unpredictable for bilateral relations and geopolitics, especially in the Indo-Pacific area, therefore New Delhi should be cautious. Harris may not be the greatest fit for New Delhi, but if she is the Democrats’ best option to unseat Trump, then she will at least maintain relations.
