The NSU is about to deliver its first substantial results four years after it was established. The stakes are also quite high; earlier this year, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur informed the Lok Sabha that a total of Rs 87.65 crore had been made available by the government for the development of the NSU.

Someone questioned my decision to open the National Sports University in Manipur, which will cost Rs 900 crore. I’d want to note that not because of the state’s population, but rather because players from the northeast have greatly influenced Indian sports, Thakur stated earlier this month in the Rajya Sabha. Many famous people from the state, like Mary Kom, Sarita Devi, Sanjita Chanu, Mirabai Chanu, Suresh Wangjam, Udanta Singh, and Ashalata Devi, frequently attend events at this university.
