Former Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has expressed confidence in Virat Kohli’s ability to bounce back in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, which gets underway on November 22 in Perth. Kohli has had a challenging time in the Test format this year, managing only 192 runs in five Tests against New Zealand and Bangladesh, with a solitary fifty. Despite this, Gavaskar is optimistic about Kohli’s prospects in Australia, where he has a stellar record1. Kohli averages an impressive 54.08 in Australia, with six centuries and four half-centuries in 13 Tests.

Gavaskar highlighted Kohli’s past performances in Australia, particularly in Perth and Adelaide, where he has played some of his finest Test innings. “Because he hasn’t got runs against New Zealand, he’ll be very, very hungry1. Even in that Adelaide Test match, where in the second innings we got all out for 36, in the first innings, Kohli got 70-plus runs before being run out. He’s consistently performed at Adelaide, so it’s a familiar ground for him1. And before Adelaide, it’s Perth, where he played one of the finest Test centuries in 2018-19. A terrific hundred1. Having performed on these grounds, he’ll feel that extra bit of confidence. Of course, you need a bit of luck at the start, but if he gets off to a good start, he will get big runs1.”
Gavaskar also noted that Kohli’s hunger for runs and his strong track record in Australia will be crucial for India, especially with regular captain Rohit Sharma set to join the squad only for the second Test in Adelaide. “Kohli will have to mentor the Indian batting line-up single-handedly in the first Test in Perth1.”
The upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy is set to be a thrilling contest, with Australia looking to defend their title as reigning world Test champions. Kohli’s performance will be key to India’s chances, and Gavaskar’s endorsement only adds to the anticipation surrounding the series.
As the cricketing world eagerly awaits the start of the series, all eyes will be on Kohli to see if he can translate his hunger for runs into big scores on Australian soil.
