Australia’s assistant coach Daniel Vettori is set to leave his duties mid-way through the opening Test against India in Perth to attend the IPL mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24-25. The IPL auction coincides with the Perth Test, scheduled to begin on November 221.

Vettori, who is also the head coach of IPL franchise SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), will oversee Australia’s final preparations for the first Test before traveling to Jeddah. Cricket Australia (CA) has expressed full support for Vettori’s dual role, acknowledging the importance of his contribution to both the national team and SRH1.

“We are very supportive of Dan’s role as Head Coach of SunRisers Hyderabad,” an Australia team spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo. “Dan will complete the final preparation for the first Test before attending the IPL auction. He will then be with the team for the remainder of the Border Gavaskar Trophy1.”
In Vettori’s absence, CA’s national development coach Lachlan Stevens will step in as the interim assistant coach during the Perth Test. Stevens, who has previously coached Australia A against India A and the Under-19s, is well-equipped to fill the role1.
The scheduling conflict highlights the growing influence of franchise cricket on international schedules. Vettori, one of the rare coaches in world cricket to hold a permanent assistant role with an international team while also being the full-time head coach of an IPL franchise and a Hundred side in Birmingham Phoenix, has been Australia’s bowling coach for all three formats since 20221.
Vettori’s decision to attend the IPL auction is not an isolated case. Former Australian captains Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer, who are head coaches of Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants respectively, will also miss their commentary duties with Channel Seven due to their commitments at the auction1.
Despite the scheduling challenges, Vettori’s contributions to Australian cricket have been highly valued. His expertise and experience have been instrumental in shaping the team’s bowling strategies, and his presence at the IPL auction underscores the importance of balancing international duties with franchise commitments.
As the cricketing world eagerly awaits the start of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, all eyes will be on how the Australian team adapts to the absence of Vettori during the crucial first Test in Perth.
