Chanu was a foregone conclusion to win gold in the 49 kg category at the National Games. It was hardly surprising that she’d do it with such ease – the weightlifter didn’t even need to use all three snatch and clean and jerk segments to settle the affair; Chanu only needed two in each of them. That was due to more than just the distance between her and the rest of the Indian lifters. Chanu was more concerned with protecting herself than with setting a record or winning a medal. The lifter injured her left wrist during training about a month ago. The injury worsened last week, and she downplayed any concerns about it worsening. Chanu stated that she did not want to take any chances by lifting heavy weights or taking any unnecessary risks at the National Games.
Based on the results of these tournaments, a ranking list will be created, and the Olympic quota winners will be determined after the qualifying period concludes on April 28, 2024.According to the rules, athletes do not have to lift at an event to fulfill the participation requirement; they can simply attend, participate in weigh-ins, and participate in the official introduction. However, for someone like Chanu, who is prone to injury, staying fit during the qualification window will be critical to ensuring participation. She is confident that her wrist will be better by the time the Worlds begin. And she already knows what she wants to achieve: 90+ kg in snatch and break my world record (119kg) total in clean and jerk.Chanu will close the gap with her Chinese rivals even further if she does this. But first, she must ensure that her injury heals completely.
