In 2024, Russia’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments to Asia are facing a slight decline despite increased demand in some countries. This is largely due to the shifting dynamics in Russia’s energy markets, compounded by sanctions and geopolitical tensions. Russia has focused on Asia to counter the impact of Western sanctions, especially in countries like China and India, which have become key importers of Russian energy supplies. However, several challenges hinder growth in these shipments.

Firstly, logistical difficulties and sanctions have led to reduced volumes of Russian crude oil. The development of infrastructure in Siberia, such as the Sakhalin offshore gas fields, is not progressing as quickly as expected, affecting Russia’s ability to ramp up LNG exports to China and other Asian markets

Additionally, steep global LNG prices have caused a dip in demand from countries like China, where LNG imports have decreased due to high costs

Furthermore, the continuing energy war between Russia and the West is altering global energy flows, leading Moscow to prioritize its energy exports to countries with fewer restrictions, but this has caused some economic and logistical pressures

. Despite these issues, Russia remains deeply committed to its “pivot to Asia,” aiming to diversify its energy export base and reduce dependency on Europe
