The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has agreed to the ‘hybrid model’ for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which would see India’s matches being played at neutral venues due to ongoing security concerns in Pakistan. While the model was initially controversial, it allowed the PCB to retain its hosting rights for the tournament, with India playing its matches outside of Pakistan. The move mirrors the arrangement seen in the 2023 Asia Cup, which also involved neutral venues for India.

However, the tension continues as PCB has pushed for the same arrangement for future ICC events in India, particularly for women’s matches and potentially the men’s tournaments. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on the other hand, is unlikely to accept these terms for tournaments hosted in India, citing that there are no security concerns that justify such a model.

This standoff highlights the ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting cricket diplomacy, as both boards navigate the complexities of hosting international events. The BCCI remains firm that India’s security infrastructure is robust enough to host matches without the need for neutral venues.
