In a candid revelation, director Pankaj Parashar shared an amusing yet telling anecdote from the sets of the 1994 film “Meri Biwi Ka Jawaab Nahin,” featuring the legendary Sridevi and a then-rookie Akshay Kumar. The film, which faced a decade-long delay before its release in 2004, is remembered for its unique pairing and the behind-the-scenes stories that have now come to light.

During a recent interview, Parashar recounted how the young Akshay Kumar, still finding his footing in the industry, struggled with a particular scene that required multiple takes. “He was a simple and nice person. There was humor in him since then. He would get up at 5 in the morning and wake me up too. Then he would take me to hilltops and do yoga. He had so much energy,” Parashar said, reflecting on Akshay’s early days.

The scene in question was a courtroom sequence with a long dialogue, and Akshay’s nerves got the better of him. Despite his best efforts, he kept flubbing his lines, much to the growing impatience of his co-star, Sridevi. “He used to panic a lot,” Parashar recalled with a laugh. “She came and told me, ‘Make him (Akshay) rehearse yaar. He’s already on his 36th take.'”
Parashar explained that he refused to call it a shot until Akshay got it right, as splitting the scene would have broken the actor’s confidence. “It was a courtroom scene and had a long dialogue. If I split it, that would break an actor’s confidence. I told him to do it as long as it becomes okay. Sridevi was sitting right there. When he finally did it, everyone clapped. That gives an actor a sense of confidence,” he said.
Despite the initial struggles, Sridevi recognized Akshay’s potential from the outset and was impressed by his dedication and talent. The film, although not a commercial success, provided Akshay with significant exposure and helped him gain confidence in his abilities.
Reflecting on the experience, Akshay has often spoken about the impact of working with Sridevi. “She was a superstar, and I was just starting out. Her patience and encouragement meant a lot to me. It was a learning experience that I will never forget,” he said in a previous interview.
“Meri Biwi Ka Jawaab Nahin” remains the only film in which Sridevi and Akshay Kumar appeared together. The movie, despite its delayed release and box office failure, holds a special place in the hearts of fans for its unique pairing and the memorable performances of its lead actor
Sridevi, often referred to as the “first female superstar” of Indian cinema, continues to be remembered fondly by millions of fans worldwide. Her career, spanning over five decades, left an indelible mark on the industry, and stories like these only add to her legendary status.
As for Akshay Kumar, he has since become one of Bollywood’s most bankable stars, known for his versatility and dedication to his craft. The anecdote from “Meri Biwi Ka Jawaab Nahin” serves as a reminder of his humble beginnings and the journey that has led him to where he is today.
