With the deadline for nominations set for Wednesday, those in the know say the new BCCI power panel has already been decided and a consensus reached after several rounds of talks over the past month.
During Shah’s first term as the Gujarat Cricket Association’s representative, Ahmedabad had virtually become the headquarters of Indian cricket, with all major events held at the new Narendra Modi stadium in Motera.
Shah is expected to be the face of India’s cricket administration, with the unassuming Binny replacing the charismatic Ganguly at the helm. The new board team reflects Shah’s influence, as he is the son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Roger Binny has filed the nomination for the president’s post, myself for the vice-post, president’s Jay Shah for secretary, Ashish Shelar for treasurer, and Devajit Saikia has filed the nomination for the joint secretary’s post, BCCI vice president Rajiv Shukla told reporters.
Ganguly’s future was the topic of conversation on an eventful day at the Cricket Centre in Mumbai. He was reportedly offered the position of IPL chairman. According to sources, he expressed his disinterest, preferring to become the ICC chairman or continue as BCCI president. Both did not occur. And Dhumal emerged as the undisputed frontrunner for the position of IPL chairman.
Binny is expected to take over as BCCI president when the BCCI holds its annual general body meeting in Mumbai on October 18. When Sandeep Patil was chairman of the senior selection committee, the soft-spoken all-rounder and president-in-waiting was a member of it. Binny is known to have recused himself from team selection meetings whenever his son Stuart’s inclusion was discussed.
