However, as well-organized as Sri Lanka’s spin department is, there is uncertainty surrounding their pace bowling unit. Dilshan Madushanka and Pramod Madushan, both left-arm seamers, emerged from obscurity during the Asia Cup. They do, however, have a combined experience of eight T20Is. Despite being included in the squad, their two most experienced bowlers, Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Kumara, are battling injuries and are uncertain.
Chameera has suffered a series of injuries, the most recent being a calf strain. Kumara, who has been recovering from a recurring hamstring injury, has done the same. Even if they regain fitness in time, they will have had little match practise u2014 Kumara last played an international game in March, while Chameera has broken down frequently and last played a competitive game in June, despite the team management’s best efforts to not overburden him. Both are expected to miss the qualifying games.
That would be a huge burden for Madushanka and Madushan. Madushanka, one of the architects of the Asia Cup victory, has the tools to succeed: he bowls at a reasonable pace (135-142 kph), has late inward movement that both Babar Azam and Virat Kohli have struggled with, and is disciplined. However, his death bowling is still a work in progress, and he bowls too many length balls.
Madushan, like Madushanka, prefers to hit the good-to-full-length band and tends to err on the shorter side when attempting to bowl back-of-length. Because of his lack of quickness, the short ball becomes fodder for batsmen. Apart from Kumara, Sri Lanka lacks a pound-the-deck bowler who can be useful in Australian conditions. Except for Kumara, no one is a skilled death-bowler.
Apart from this quartet u2014 two of whom are uncertain and two of whom are inexperienced u2014 Sri Lanka has little depth in the pace bowling department. Chamika Karunaratne is a medium-pacer who is usually limited to part-time duties. Dasun Shanaka has become a reluctant bowler since taking over as captain. There is also little hope on the reserve bench. Binura Fernando, the only fast-bowling option, averages nearly eight and a half runs per over. As a result, Sri Lanka is once again overly reliant on their multi-talented spinners.
