On August 9, Williams announced her retirement from tennis, stating that she is evolving away from the sport. The tennis star, 40, stated that the best word to describe what she is doing is evolution, and that she wishes to expand her family.
I’ve never liked the term retirement. It doesn’t strike me as a modern word. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition, but I want to be careful how I use that word, which has a very specific and important meaning to a community of people, Serena said in a Vogue magazine article.
Serena has won the most Grand Slam singles titles of any player in the open era and the second-most of all time, trailing only Margaret Court’s 24.
