Since early 2017, England has been unable to defeat India in bilateral T20I series played at home or away. This year, India defeated England 2-1 at home in a three-match series.
Individual performers for India have been found across the board during the Super 12 stage, with the standouts being Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli with the bat and Arshdeep Singh with the ball.
If there has been a weakness, it has been in the finishing department, with Dinesh Karthik failing to provide the magic touch that he has provided for India this year. He returned to the Indian team after some outstanding performances for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2022 IPL.
However, he has failed to produce, recording only single-digit scores when given the opportunity to bat. Karthik was replaced in India’s last Super 12 match against Zimbabwe by Rishabh Pant, who has had an inconsistent run in T20Is despite captaining the team during their home series against South Africa in June this year.
Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid may include left-handed Pant, who could provide a good match-up against Adil Rashid’s leg spin. Pant, unlike Karthik, could be used as a No. 5 batter. Axar Patel, the spin-bowling all-rounder who was left out against Zimbabwe, could be recalled.
India haven’t made many changes to their lineup this tournament, so it’s hard to see them doing much more than dropping Karthik, which means spinner Yuzvendra Chahal will remain on the bench.
