Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, December 5, chaired a meeting of leaders from all parties on India’s presidency of the G20 and sought their cooperation to make it a big success, while opposition leaders urged him to use the opportunity for the country’s benefit. The administration emphasised the year-long initiatives that have been planned during India’s presidency at the conference. They added that PM Modi stated in his speech that it was a moment for the entire nation to be proud of and that everyone should work for its success. At a BJP meeting, the Prime Minister had made similar remarks, adding that everyone should be pleased with the progress.The leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Mamata Banerjee, who is also the chief minister of West Bengal, stated during the conference that the G20 presidency was not about the agenda of one party, but rather of the whole nation. As for India holding the G20 presidency, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that was something to be proud of. He urged PM Modi to take use of the situation for India’s good, reduce the trade imbalance with China, and prevent further invasions at the border. As his predecessor Manmohan Singh had done during the 2008 economic crisis, he also urged the Prime Minister to take advantage of this chance to help the nation gain a permanent seat in the UN Security Council and play a significant role in aiding nations out of the debt problem. He also urged the Prime Minister to keep working to uphold peace and foster conditions that would prevent future outbreaks of armed conflict in regards to India’s position on the conflict in Ukraine.

The CPI(M) reiterated that India is in charge of the grouping thanks to a rotating presidency in a statement that focused on Yechury’s remarks from the conference. In the meantime, Congress president Kharge stated that according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), 53 countries are experiencing a debt crisis and expressed the hope that India will lead the way in assisting these nations to emerge from the problem. According to sources, Kharge also requested that PM Modi assist in developing a system that may facilitate the return of fugitives who committed economic crime in India but fled to other nations.Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Sikkim’s Prem Singh Tamang, and Maharashtra’s Eknath Shinde attended the meeting. Also in attendance were Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, his Andhra Pradesh counterpart Jagan Mohan Reddy, Tamil Nadu’s MK Stalin, BJP president JP Nadda, former prime minister HD Deve Gowda and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief Chandrababu Naidu.Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Union Minister Piyush Goyal were all in attendance during the meeting.
India officially assumed the G20 presidency on December 1.
The country is expected to host over 200 preparatory meetings across the country beginning this month. The next G20 Leaders’ Summit at the level of heads of state or governments is scheduled to be held on September 9 and 10 next year in New Delhi. G20 or Group of 20 is an intergovernmental forum of the world’s major developed and developing economies. G20 comprises Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US and the European Union.
